Salman gets 5 yrs RI, sent to Jodhpur jail

Salman KhanBollywood actor Salman Khan was on Monday sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and sent to the Central Jail in Jodhpur by a local court in connection with the 1998 black buck poaching case.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Brijendra Kumar Jain also imposed Rs 25,000 fine on Salman, who was taken into custody and sent to the jail.

The court ordered one-year rigorous imprisonment for co-accused Govardhan Singh and imposed Rs 5000 fine on him.

Four other persons were acquitted in the 1998 case when a Chinkara (Deer species) was killed by Salman at Ghora farmhouse in Jodhpur.

Salman, facing four poaching cases, was earlier sentenced to one-year imprisonment by the same court on February 17 for killing the endangered animal but the sentence was suspended for a month to enable him to appeal.

Seven other accused, including comedian Satish Shah, were acquitted in this case. In other cases, actors Saif Ali Khan, Neelam, Tabu and Sonali Bendre are co-accused.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, who heard the defence counsel's argument on March 28, had fixed April 10 for the judgment.

The court had on April 7 rejected Salman's application to summon a witness, Harish Dulani, who missed court appearances for many years.

Dulani, who was said to be the main witness in the poaching case, had reportedly retracted from his earlier statement that he had seen Salman killing the animal.

Salman will have to spend at least one more night in prison before his lawyers can apply for bail as the courts were closed for two days on account of holidays.

"Salman is being treated like an ordinary prisoner and has been lodged in a simple cell like any other inmate. He is being provided with same facilities as any normal convict," a jail official said.

"For dinner Salman was given roti, aloo tamatar ki subzi (potato-tomato vegetable) to eat, while in breakfast he was served gur-channa (jaggery-gram). In today's (Monday) lunch he was served dal (pulses), roti and rice," he said.

For water he has been provided an earthen pot. He has also been allowed to get newspapers from outside, he added.

His personal security guard Shera and a local friend Shishupal Singh Rajpurohit were with him when he arrived at the jail on Monday afternoon.

Rajpurohit later took clothes, toothbrush, a shaving kit and Odomos (mosquito repellent) to the jail for Salman.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan was granted bail by Jodhpur court on Thursday.

The actor, who was in jail since Monday, after being sentenced to five years imprisonment for killing an endangered animal, was granted bail by district and session judge G S Surana.

Salman was given bail on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each. His lawyers said they were trying to complete the formalities, so that the actor could be released from jail by Thursday evening.

Salman was not present in the court when the judge granted him bail. He had appeared before the court earlier in the day in connection with his appeal against another poaching case, in which he has been sentenced to one year imprisonment. He was later sent to the jail.

The actor's brother Suhail Khan, sister Alvira, his friend Katrina Kaif, besides a number of Bollywood personalities including Govinda, David Dhawan and Sajiid Nadiadwala were present in the court.

A large number of Salman's fans and supporters had gathered outside the court since Thursday morning, shouting slogans in his support. Police had a tough time controlling the jubiliant fans, as the news of his being granted bail came out. Police had to resort to a mild lathi charge to control them.
