Backstreet Boys has been one of the only international bands to sell over 100,000 copies of all their albums in India.
They revived the boy band craze in the 90s and after a five-year hiatus the more mature men are back with their newest album Never Gone.
Here’s a look at what Nick, Howie, Brian and AJ have to say about growing up, their music and, of course, India’s new brand ambassador Mallika Sherawat
How different is Never Gone from your earlier work? Nick: AJ’s gone through a lot of stuff. I’ve gone from a 12-year-old boy to a 25-year-old man. Brian started a family. We’ve all been through so much and that has transcended into our music.
We had to grow up in a sense, but at the same time keep it sort of cool and organic in a way that we respect — a lot more guitar, live strings, live drums.
Howie: We tried to get away from the whole synth sound, stuff that we used to do.
Do you think the 90s popularity of boy bands is over? How have you survived the change? Brian: There are so many more forms of music now as compared to when we started out. I don’t really think any trend of music is dying out. It’s just that too many new trends are emerging.
Kevin: As far as surviving is concerned, at the end of the day, it’s the music that stands out.
Initially, almost all your singles hit the top of the charts. Now, it’s been five years since your last studio effort… AJ: Everything’s changed in my life since I’ve been sober (AJ kicked off a drug and alcohol addiction). We all have a really great bond now than ever before. With the Black ‘n’ Blue tour, there was a lot of darkness around us. We had been touring straight for nine years, so we took a much deserved break and we all cleared our heads.
A lot of popular female singers are voluptuous today (eg Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce Knowles etc). Is that a new trend? Brian: Really?? We hadn’t noticed that.
And is that why you are eyeing Mallika Sherawat for your next video? Nick: We just thought she (Mallika Sherawat) looked interesting and wanted to see what the fuss was all about at Cannes.
Her reaction? Kevin: Don’t know. What did she say?
But is her look that different from the look women already have in the West? What’s Mallika’s ‘X’ factor? AJ: If everyone knew what it was, it’d no longer be the X factor right? She looks good and we hear she’s vivacious.
What is going on with your solo careers? Nick: We’re all concentrating on Never Gone at this point. We were so totally exhausted and at our wits end after the Black and Blue tour that it was really tough on all of us to think about our careers or anything else.
Why didn’t you include India on your tours previously? Is it now a viable market? Kevin: We’ve always wanted to come to India and visit our fans. Hopefully things will work out and we will get a chance to perform there soon. Brian: Besides, Indian food and fashion have become a rage in the US, hence how can it not be a viable market?
