RE: SHAH RUKH KHAN

SRK, Rani, Big B make it a perfect Paheli for Amol Palekar
Shooting over, director’s big-budget, commercial break gets ready for Diwali release.

‘‘CAN I produce this film?’’ Shah Rukh Khan asked Amol Palekar when he sought an appointment with Bollywood’s favourite star to ask him whether he would play the hero in his new big-budget film.

As it turned out, Sandhya Gokhale’s script of a legendary Rajasthani love story excited Shah Rukh — and a whole host of Bollywood biggies, it appears. Rani Mukherjee, Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Juhi Chawla, Sunil Shetty are all part of the star cast.

Though Palekar hates to admit it, Paheli sets a new precedent for him as director, where his audience will widen, thanks to all the ingredients of mainstream cinema that have gone into making the film, what with a high profile cast, six songs, special effects and elaborate sets.

Palekar’s got one of the best music directors — M M Kreem — on board, and Gulzar as lyricist. The playback singers include Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Madhushree and Shreya Ghoshal.

Paheli is based on the novel Duvidha penned by Rajasthan’s Sahitya Akademi winner Vijaydan Detha. A folk love story, Sandhya Gokhale says Mani Kaul made it into a film in 1963 but that ‘‘the perception was totally different.’’

In typical Palekar fashion, the film was shot in 43 days flat — 21 days in Rajasthan and 22 days in Mumbai. Palekar and Gokhale have just returned to the city after completing shooting. Says Palekar: ‘‘Now, the post production work will begin and since we want to make it technically very savvy, I cannot give a precise timeframe when the film will be complete but it should be over around Diwali.’’

Palekar, whose last commercial film Anaahat with Sonali Bendre made waves and ran to packed houses for months, says Paheli is a feel-good film. ‘‘You will want to see it again.’’ But he was reluctant to reveal either the story or the budget. ‘‘It is not as big a budget as Devdas nor as small as Anaahat.’’ Shah Rukh’s wife Gauri Khan is the producer of the film through her company, Red Chillies Entertainment.

Palekar, who is well-known for experimenting with variegated themes, says he had wanted to do a film on this novel for a long time. It took Palekar and Gokhale a year to research the project.

Palekar says he has many firsts in Paheli, like using elaborate sets — a sprawling haveli from the Navalgad area of Rajasthan was recreated; special effects, thanks to Shah Rukh who he says is extremely techno-savvy; and sync sound (not dubbing).

SRK recommended Sunil for 'Paheli' !

King Khan feeling quite safe after Sunil Shetty gave him a positive nod for 'Paheli'.

When 'Paheli' is already complete for release, Shah Rukh urged director Amol Palekar to cast Sunil Shetty. As the producer of the film, SRK doesn't want to loose his 'Main Hoon Naa' co-star. 'Main Hoon Naa' was one of the biggest hits of last year.
Shah Rukh wants to try Sunil in 'Paheli' as a luck factor.
Sunil will play a small but important roll opposite Juhi Chawla

Shah Rukh Khan: The Lord Of Bollywood Rings

It is very difficult to avoid the clichés when you are referring to Shah Rukh Khan. Nearly impossible for India’s most saleable star. Even his favourite script-writer friend Karan Johar could not avoid them at a recent award ceremony.

So, how rich is the Badhshah of Bollywood? The King Khan. Well, rich enough to buy a sprawling heritage house at Bandra, (worth crores) enough to cough up more to save it, enough to buy a dream machine (the current one be-ing a BMW) and well let’s say certainly enough for one lifetime.

Apart from the couple of crores (Rs 5 is a guestimate) he charges per film, the King Khan has no qualms saying that he will sing and dance for anyone that pays him.

So, the acts on stage, at marriages all have followed. And though Neha Dhupia may says that ‘Only sex and SRK sell in this country’, the King himself believes in working for that money.

“I believe that you should not take interest money. I believe in the Islamic principle that you should not take money if you don’t deserve it. You should work for it. I don’t dabble in shares. Nor do I dabble in speculation, lottery, gambling. I know it’s an old-fashioned thought but I believe that money is no good money. I don’t think I deserve it unless I have wrestled for it, boxed for it, run for it, made a painting for it...I like that money,” he said once in an interview.

As the money poured in from the movies and the endorsements, SRK began sowing the seeds of Dream Unlimited along with actor Juhi Chawla. Today, he is a successful producer with Chalte Chalte.

He believes in his friends and will work hard for them, whether it is giving friend Farah Khan her debut as director in his home production Main Hoon Naa with his Red Chillies Entertainment or doing an item number in Johar’s Kaal.

The award list is too long and though critics say he looks insecure every time his younger colleagues dance in step to the box office tunes, Khan berth on India’s power list is secure

Shahrukh Khan's Dubai dome!

“The day the importance of my work overtakes Mannat, I'll consider myself a star!” quipped SRK recently. If that is the criteria, then it will be a while until SRK considers himself a true blue star. Because his recent buy in Dubai is the talk of the town. Is it true that you have bought a villa in Dubai? we ask “Yes. But it was an impromptu move” he says, trying to inflate the hype around. “I was in Dubai for a show and had half a day off. I had heard a lot about the Palm Resorts, and so went to see it” he says plainly. “This company Nakheel took me around and I fell in love with the place. Hey know what, apparently the Palm Resorts can be seen from the moon” Shahrukh says with a lopsided smile.

But what is it about the place that he took to it? “Well, it's intensely private. But he happens to be among the few stars who have never had any problem with the supposed 'loss of privacy'. “Well, it's just that I felt that I don't get to spend enough time with my kids. Here in India, I need a lot of security if I were to do even a minor outing” the superstar says with genuine concern. “I want to be able it do any and everything with Aryan and Suhana. Go to a beach, build sand castles, go fishing, do all of that with them” he says with an unmistakable fondness (SRK is an extra delight when he talks about his kids) “I know it's going to be a little expensive but I'll have David Bekham and Bill Clinton as neighours! I guess that should console the holes in my pocket” he humors us.

Word has it that he is also getting into real estate? “Real estate?” he exclaims. Yeah, the rumor has it that you are keen to make SRK Towers. “Now this is hilarious! I know nothing about real estate” he pleads innocent. “It's just that I am making some extensions to Mannat. Though the place is huge, we have only three bedrooms, so when guests come in, there is no place to put them up, so we decided to add 4 floors to the houses” he reasons. And what will the renewed Mannat look like? “Well, nothing too opulent just that the house will now have a guest room, a formal living room, a gymnasium (post the back problem he now exercises regularly) and a office to help me work from home” he winds his list. “It took me 2 years to procure permissions. So I thought of renovating it before the rules change once again” he mocks.

Shahrukh on Vivek…

It's popular knowledge that Vivek idolizes SRK & calls him 'God'. When SRK was asked what he felt about the remark, the badshah said, “Yeah, I have heard that he has said some nice things about me. In an age when every third actor is trying to displace me, the guy supposedly likes me, & looks up to me. I am not sure how good an idol I make, but I'll try & live up to what he said” King Khan cracked. The two even worked together in Shaad Ali's Saathiya… “Yeah, but I didn't get to interact with him much. But whatever I saw of him, the guy showed promise”

"I am not moving into politics, now or ever" - SRK

Having rubbished rumours that he was going to become a neta, Shah Rukh Khan sheds light on his recent meeting with Priyanka Gandhi at his house. He says: “I met ‘Mrs Robert Vadhera’, and not ‘Priyanka Gandhi’. That was my feeling when the couple came to my house for dinner. And Robert is such a wonderful guy too.”

Khan denies a political connection with the Gandhis: “It’s all rumour. It belittles our friendship. I have known them for some years now. I drop in to say hi to them everytime I’m in Delhi. It’s a personal relationship,” he elucidates. “My parents knew Indiraji. It’s as silly as assuming that they’re meeting me because they want to join films,” he says. “All my fans and the industrywallahs can rest their speculation. I am not moving into politics, now or ever. I don’t know the job. I don’t have that bent of mind. I don’t have a politician’s perseverance,” he adds. On the possibility of friends like Priyanka asking him to join the Congress party, Khan clarifies, “None of my friends have asked me that.” Khan is now readying himself for his next co-production, Kaal, with pal Karan Johar. This is the duo’s first business partnership. Khan says it was one of the wishes of the late Yash Johar, Karan’s father, that Khan should be a part of his filmmaking company in whichever way possible. Khan elaborates, “Yash Johar wanted me to be a partner in all Karan’s films. He wished me to share in just the profit and not the investment and the losses. It’s sweet but strange. With his passing away I have become the elder person in the family. So, obviously the ideology of the contract stands no more. Being the elder one, I will have to take the onus of both the credit and the discredit of the company.” On his part, Karan Johar trusts the integrity of their friendship. “Ideally, I wouldn’t recommend friends becoming business partners, but after dad passed away, Shah Rukh is now the protective force in my life,”he says. On his turning 40 this year, Khan gets philosophical, “I haven’t realised how quickly the fifteen years in the industry have passed by. But I am aware of my physical injuries and fatigue. I am glad that I’m still able to do what many others at 40 are not able to do. The plaudits don’t matter as long as I can bring a smile to faces of my fans.”
