Triple talaq stays but Muslim Board’s reform wants it as last resort




AFTER months of debate, within and outside, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board is ready with a final format for its model nikahnama.
In essence, it admits that triple talaq cannot be done away with but builds in a stronger, more institutionalised system of mediation, checks and balances, before a couple decide on divorce.
To this effect, the model nikaahnama—which won’t be binding—will have a hidayatnama (advisory note) that suggests several ways for resolving discord between husband and wife before they finally proceed for talaaq (divorce). Besides, it details the duties of husband and wife and gives extensive information about the Shariat (Islamic Law).
